Concerns about reopening of schools

THE EDITOR, Madam:

I am writing as a concerned citizen and advocate for the welfare of our teachers, students, and families. While I understand and appreciate the Government’s efforts to restore normality and resume education as quickly as possible, I am deeply concerned about the decision to reopen schools so soon after the devastation caused by Hurricane Melissa.

Although some areas were not directly impacted by the storm and may appear ready to resume classes, the emotional and social effects of this disaster extend far beyond the physical damage. Many students and teachers have family members, friends, or loved ones in affected communities — some of whom are still missing, have lost their homes, or tragically lost their lives. This reality weighs heavily on the hearts and minds of our school communities and cannot be ignored.

In addition, numerous communities continue to struggle with limited access to electricity, clean water, and safe transportation. Forcing a premature return to school risks compromising both safety and emotional readiness. Education thrives in stability, and we must ensure that our teachers and students have the time and resources needed to recover before resuming formal learning.

I respectfully urge the Government to reconsider the reopening schedule and allow more time for assessment, clean-up, and emotional recovery. It would also be helpful for the ministry to communicate clearly with the public about the criteria being used to determine which schools are safe and ready to reopen.

I trust that the health, safety, and emotional well-being of our teachers and students will continue to be at the centre of all decisions made in this challenging time.
