Flooding along Morrison Street in Spanish Town, St Catherine following torrential rains in July 2024.

As Hurricane Melissa approaches, St Catherine Chamber president Dennis Robotham is urging urgent drain cleaning in Spanish Town to help prevent flooding.

"Sections of the town, Wellington Street, Cumberland Road and other streets, would do well with urgent remedial work to ease the problem of flooding," Robotham said.

He noted that members of the business community are in a state of readiness for the passage of the hurricane, which forecasters have warned could have catastrophic effects.

"The members are preparing in anticipation of this dreaded hurricane, which is said to be of catastrophic proportion. We can only hope that things work out as best as possible for all concerned," he said.

Forecasters have warned that the storm, now a Category 1 hurricane, could intensify rapidly and dump up to 25 inches of rain on the island over the coming days.
