Transport Minister Daryl Vaz says the Norman Manley International Airport in Kingston will close late Saturday amid the threat of Tropical Storm Melissa.
He said the final scheduled flight is expected to arrive at 8 p.m., but any delays will be accommodated before the closure.
A 2 p.m. meeting will determine when the Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay will shut down.
“All flights will be accommodated today at both Norman Manley and Sangster International Airport. So, my recommendation for those of you who want to get back to Jamaica or to get out of Jamaica is to try and change your arrangements to get out today,” Vaz advised during a special press briefing at Jamaica House on Saturday.
Vaz also said that he has already signed an order - awaiting only a date - to allow for toll booths to be opened closer to the time the storm or hurricane impacts Jamaica.
“Right now, the build is not bad, and we are monitoring it. I have already signed an order that just needs to be dated so that it can be effected immediately. I suspect probably closer to Monday ... that is when the necessity would arise,” he said.
The minister added that once the system passes, the toll roads will also be opened for emergency services and other persons who may need to check on their families or businesses.
The Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC) is also on standby to assist with evacuations if required, Vaz said.
