The Department of Correctional Services ( DCS ) says it has activated comprehensive emergency plans to safeguard the lives and well-being of inmates aand staff as Hurricane Melissa approaches Jamaica.
In a statement on Monday, the DCS sought to reassure families and loved ones of those in its care, as the island braces for the Category 5 hurricane, which is expected to move northward and exit through St Ann on Tuesday evening.
The department said all correctional institutions have implemented emergency preparedness measures to ensure safety and security. As part of these efforts, visits to correctional facilities have been suspended until further notice.
“The DCS remains vigilant and fully committed to maintaining order and care during this period. Our officers and staff are on high alert and continue to work around the clock to ensure that safety protocols are observed and that the welfare of all individuals in custody is prioritised,” the department said.
