The Ministry of Health & Wellness is advising Jamaicans to stock up on mosquito repellent to protect themselves from mosquito bites in anticipation of a significant increase in the mosquito population post-Hurricane Melissa.
The health ministry says vector control activities, including fogging, larviciding, and community inspections, are likely to be temporarily disrupted following the passage of Hurricane Melissa.
Jamaicans are being encouraged to wear protective clothing, such as long sleeves and pants, and install screens on windows and doors.
Citizens are also being encouraged to increase their vigilance in identifying and destroying mosquito-breeding sites by, among other things, punching holes into old cans and covering water drums.
The Ministry says it will resume full vector control operations as soon as it is safe to do so.
