77 per cent of Jamaica without electricity, minimal disruption to water

Some 77 per cent of Jamaica is now without electricity following the passage of Hurricane Melissa.

Information Minister Dr Dana Morris Dixon gave the update on Wednesday.

The Jamaica Public Service has approximately 700,000 customers.

Morris Dixon said the least affected parishes are St Thomas, St Catherine, Kingston and St Andrew.

Regarding water, she said about 70 water systems out of over 700 islandwide were down last night.

She said that it is too early to say the extent of the damage from the Category 5 storm, saying that assessments are to be carried out in the coming days.

Prime Minister Dr Andrew Holness is to tour Manchester, St Elizabeth, Westmoreland and St James today.
