Leader of the Opposition Mark Golding is encouraging Jamaicans to come together and remain resilient as the country begins to pick up the pieces from the devastation caused by the Category 5 Hurricane Melissa.
The powerful storm battered the country with strong winds and heavy rains, causing widespread flooding and displacement.
At least four deaths have been confirmed by the Government so far.
St Elizabeth, Westmoreland, and St James are among the worst-affected parishes.
The majority of the country is without electricity, with communication and Internet connectivity being a challenge.
The Government today reported that over 25,000 Jamaicans are in hurricane shelters
In a statement on Wednesday, Golding stated that despite the adversity, the spirit of Jamaicans remains unbreakable.
“To those who have suffered loss, your pain is our pain. You are not alone,” he said.
The opposition leader stated that the coming days will require strength but expressed confidence in the nation’s ability to overcome.
“We are a people who have always turned trials into triumphs. By linking our hands and our hearts, we will clear the debris, we will rebuild our communities, and we will rise from this stronger than before.”
Golding said the Opposition People’s National Party stands ready to support recovery efforts.
“This is our home, and together, we will see Jamaica shine again. Let us move forward with hope and unity. Let’s show the world that we are, and will always be, Jamaica Strong. One Love.”
