The closure of the St Catherine Parish Court due to damage caused by Hurricane Melissa has resulted in great discomfort for staff and concern among persons with court cases.

When The Gleaner visited the location today, personnel from the administration office were explaining the state of conditions post-Melissa to persons who turned up for court.

While understanding the situation, some persons expressed concern about the future of their court cases and the extended delay in getting justice.

“Boi, I fully understand that we have a disaster, but it is five years now mi coming here, and at the last appearance the judge said the matter would have ended. But it look like another delay,” a man told The Gleaner.

His views echoed those of many others who turned out to get new dates in keeping with the rescheduled opening.

While staff worked assiduously to ensure a smooth resumption of court, they too are affected by the displacement caused by the hurricane, which has left a leaking roof at the Rodney Memorial Building that houses the administrative arm of the courthouse.

A structural check conducted last Thursday revealed that the structure lost its integrity and is not suitable for occupation by staff or members of the public.

The Gleaner observed employees removing furniture, files, books, and other items from that location across to the courthouse building.

It was revealed that three spaces, including the room where Circuit Court is conducted, are to be retrofitted to accommodate the more than 40 court staff.

It was announced that Parish, Family, and Civil Court sittings will be out until November 10, while the Michaelmas Session of the St Catherine Circuit Court will continue at the Home Circuit in Kingston.
