As the country undertakes relief activities following Hurricane Melissa, the Integrity Commission says it will be diligently utilising its monitoring and investigative resources to ensure that any identified acts of corruption or impropriety during these times are dealt with in accordance with the law.
The anti-corruption agency says that while it recognises the needs are immediate and that the usual strictures of government procurement and related implementation processes may be largely relaxed in keeping with emergency procedures, it is important that proper procedures are followed.
The commission is urging all parties responsible for overseeing the different aspects of the aid process to make every effort to ensure that the mechanisms established to provide assistance adhere to the principles of fairness, integrity, accountability, and transparency.
The commission says it recognises the efforts on the part of all arms of government to respond to the needs of people impacted by the hurricane.
However, it says it has a responsibility to uphold its statutory mandate.
The Integrity Commission is urging members of the public and government employees to promptly report any instances of mismanagement or corruption.
