The Jamaica Public Service (JPS) is urging customers without electricity not to pay anyone, including contractors, who offer to reconnect their power for a fee amid outages caused by Hurricane Melissa, stressing that this is not only illegal but dangerous.

JPS, in a post on its social media pages, says reconnecting power under these circumstances could cause the electrocution of children, other innocent bystanders, or the culprits themselves.

Further, the company says it puts the lives of JPS workers at risk.

Additionally, it says it could set back restoration efforts and keep communities in the dark for longer.

“If you are approached by a contractor for payment for connection of your power, take a photo of their vehicle and licence plate, and send a Direct Message to JPS on our social media pages ©myjpsonline.”
