Jamaica’s ambassador to Washington, Antony Anderson, has praised the diaspora’s swift response to Hurricane Melissa, which struck the island on October 28, causing widespread damage to homes, communities and livelihoods.

In a New Year message, the ambassador said the storm had tested the nation’s resolve, but also revealed the strength of ties between Jamaica and the US community.

“Across the United States and around the world, the Jamaican diaspora and friends of Jamaica responded swiftly to the call for support. This response was a clear demonstration of solidarity and compassion in action”.

Noting that “several tonnes of much-needed relief items were shipped to Jamaica”, Anderson thanked “individuals, organisations, student groups and community partners across the United States and beyond for their solidarity”.

Since taking up the post in May, Anderson said the cohesion of the diaspora had been palpable. In August, Jamaica’s 63rd Independence was marked with events under the banner “Be Proud. Be Bold. In Your Black, Green and Gold”. Church services and celebrations raised funds for health care and education.

Bilateral relations with the United States remain firm, he added. Joint work has yielded tangible results, including the revision of Jamaica’s travel advisory from level three to level two.

US emergency assistance after the hurricane underscored the strength of the partnership.

“The strength of our relations remains firm and on sound footing, as evidenced by the emergency and life-saving assistance extended by the United States to the Government of Jamaica,” Anderson noted.

Looking ahead to 2026, the ambassador pledged to deepen community ties, strengthen partnerships and amplify diaspora voices.

“I look forward to deepening this shared sense of community and purpose, strengthening partnerships, amplifying diaspora voices, and working together to advance Jamaica’s development and global standing. The diaspora remains an indispensable partner in our national journey, and I am confident that, together, we will continue to build a future defined by opportunity, unity, and shared success,” Anderson said.

He extended best wishes for a year of health, opportunity and progress, stressing that Jamaica’s diaspora remains central to Jamaica’s development and global standing.
