As Jamaicans welcome the New Year, the South East Regional Health Authority (SERHA) is encouraging members of the public to make their health a priority by adopting healthier lifestyle habits and committing to preventive care throughout 2026.
SERHA, in a release, sought to remind the public that incremental, consistent changes can significantly improve overall well-being and reduce the risk of chronic illnesses, such as diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, and respiratory conditions.
The regional health authority’s health tips for the new year include:
• Eat a balanced diet: Increase the intake of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins, while reducing salt, sugar and processed foods.
• Stay physically active: Aim for at least 30 minutes [for adults] of moderate physical activity most days of the week, such as walking, jogging, or home-based exercises.
• Attend regular health check-ups: Early detection saves lives. Persons are encouraged to visit their nearest health centre for routine screenings, including blood pressure, blood sugar, and cholesterol checks.
• Prioritise mental health: Practice stress-management techniques, ensure adequate rest, and seek professional support when needed.
• Stay hydrated and get enough sleep: Drinking sufficient water and getting seven to eight hours of sleep each night are essential for maintaining good health.
• Practise good hygiene and preventive care: Continue regular handwashing and follow public health guidance to reduce the spread of illnesses.
“As we begin a new year, the public is being encouraged to take proactive steps towards healthier living. Prevention remains one of the most effective tools in safeguarding our health and strengthening our healthcare system,” said Lascelles Brown, regional director of SERHA.
SERHA also reaffirmed its commitment to providing accessible, quality healthcare services across the region and urged residents to utilise services available at public health facilities.
