The Lawyers’ Christian Fellowship on Monday expressed grave concern over multiple fatal shootings by security forces at the start of the year, warning that rising deaths undermine public trust and respect for human life.

The group acknowledged the major reduction in murders and major crimes in 2025 but said ""this achievement is severely undermined by the significant increase in fatal encounters involving the security forces".

"Even more troubling is the indication that this pattern has continued into the new year, with multiple deaths reported on New Year’s Day alone, including during joint police and military operations," LCF said in a statement.

The organisation highlighted reports from communities where eyewitness accounts seem to contradict official statements, including incidents in which civilians, including a child, allegedly died under questionable circumstances.

The group has called for prompt, independent, and transparent investigations into all fatal shootings. It also urged mandatory use of body-worn cameras during security operations.

The LCF also appealed to churches and civil society to pray and act for justice and peace, stressing that safeguarding life is not an obstacle to national security but its foundation.

Data from the Independent Commission of Investigations show that as of January 2, eight people had been fatally shot by police.

In the New Year’s Day operation in Brown’s Lane, St James, two men were killed and a high-powered rifle seized. The shooting of a four-year-old and reported wounding of a 68-year-old woman sparked protests from residents.
