A woman was shot in the neck during a robbery at an establishment along Grants Pen Road in St Andrew on Thursday.

She was rushed to the University Hospital of the West Indies, where she remains admitted and is undergoing treatment.

Investigators say her condition is stable.

The police report that about 4:45 p.m., a man entered the establishment posing as a customer.

It is further reported that he subsequently brandished a firearm and demanded cash and other valuables.

The woman reportedly handed over her company cell phone.

It is reported that while fleeing, the robber discharged a single round, which struck the woman in the right side of her neck.

The man then escaped on a motorcycle.

Divisional Commander for the St Andrew North Police Division, Superintendent Randy Sweeney, confirmed the incident.

He has appealed to persons and businesses to remain vigilant and to apply precautionary measures.

“The police use this opportunity to encourage persons to be vigilant, especially regarding acquisitory crimes such as robberies and break-ins, which is a concern to the division over the years,” Sweeney said.

“Install CCTV systems. And they should also join or establish business and neighbourhood watches, ensure windows and doors are properly locked and report any suspicious persons or activities observed to the police quickly,” he added.

As at January 17, the division has recorded a drop in all major crimes such as shootings, injured persons, and robberies.
