Dr Camilio Trench, marine biologist and lecturer at The University of the West Indies, together with a representative from the National Environment and Planning Agency plant mangrove seedlings to offset regrowth of the degraded mangrove forest.
The Forestry Department headed to St Elizabeth for World Wetlands Day on February 2, where more than 80 volunteers from partner agencies, private entities, and the community removed debris from the mangrove to jumpstart restoration of the degraded area during a Bulky Waste Clean-up, done in observation of the day.
Their efforts were made as part of the Reforestation, Ecological Enhancement and Landscape Framework (Re-LEAF) Initiative.
