The Trelawny Municipal Corporation says it is confident that it will meet its property tax target of $379 million despite widespread damage in Trelawny following the passage of Hurricane Melissa last year.

The target deadline is March 31, when the current 2025-2026 financial year ends.

The hurricane caused significant damage to homes and businesses across the parish.

"Despite the devastation caused by Melissa, including the forced closure of the Jackson Town Tax office, our collection is going good," said Collen Gager, the mayor of Falmouth and chairman of the municipal corporation.

He added that a mobile tax unit has been deployed to make payments more convenient for property owners.

“What we have found is that people are serious about paying their taxes. In fact, if the trend continues, we may even surpass the target,” Gager said.
