Students from across St Catherine recently gathered at Dinthill Technical High School for a college fair organised by the Kiwanis Club of Linstead, the first event of its kind hosted by the chapter.
Fourteen tertiary institutions participated, offering information on programmes, admissions requirements, scholarships and career options. Students, parents and teachers used the opportunity to speak directly with representatives, an uncommon level of access for many in the area.
More than 400 students attended from Linstead, Bog Walk, Ewarton, Spanish Town, Glengoffe, Guys Hill and Portmore.
The event also included student centred activities, such as a “spin the wheel” prize feature and a jingle competition promoting the value of education. Enid Bennett High School won the competition with a performance that drew strong support from peers and teachers.
Kiwanis Club President Marlon Stephens urged students to see further education as attainable. “Education, whether university, college, or technical training is not just for the rich or the privileged,” he told the audience. “Your circumstances do not define your ceiling; higher education is for you, it is your right.” His remarks received sustained applause.
Lieutenant-governor for Kiwanis Division 23 West, Dionne Chambers, also encouraged students to take advantage of the opportunities presented.
Organisers say the fair is expected to become an annual fixture, in keeping with Kiwanis International’s focus on serving children and supporting community development.
Students left the event with brochures, application details and guidance that teachers hope will strengthen the region’s tertiary education uptake.
