The Opposition People’s National Party (PNP) says the increasing severe humanitarian situation in Cuba requires a principled and compassionate response from countries across the region and the wider globe.
Highlighting Cuba’s longstanding relationship with Jamaica, the PNP noted that the island is Jamaica’s closest neighbour and has, for more than five decades, consistently supported national development efforts, particularly in health and education.
The party, in a media release on Monday, pointed to the thousands of Jamaicans who have benefited from Cuban medical missions, scholarships, and technical cooperation, describing the Cuban people’s contributions as extraordinarily generous.
The PNP stressed that this legacy of assistance must not be overlooked, especially as external pressures intensify and continue to negatively impact the daily lives and well-being of the Cuban population.
It said the region has a responsibility to respond with understanding and solidarity during this period of mounting humanitarian and economic challenges.
According to the party, recognising Cuba’s significant contributions to Jamaica and the wider Caribbean carries with it an obligation to act with empathy, fairness, and respect for sovereignty.
The PNP underscored that shared history and strong regional bonds should guide the response to the current crisis.
The party also called for regional and international engagement grounded in international law, non-interference, and peaceful cooperation.
It urged the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and other countries in the region and beyond to defend these principles to ensure dialogue, stability, and peaceful coexistence.
Reaffirming its commitment to regional solidarity and constructive diplomacy, the PNP maintained that humanitarian considerations and enduring partnerships must shape the international response to the difficulties facing the Cuban people.
