Former People’s National Party (PNP) Member of Parliament, Jolyan Silvera, is expected to be sentenced today for the killing of his wife, Melissa, in 2023. He pleaded guilty to manslaughter in February.
Melissa Silvera, 42, was found dead at the couple’s Stony Hill, St Andrew home in November 2023.
Chief Justice Bryan Sykes is to hand down the sentence. The hearing is scheduled to start at 10 a.m. The offence carries a maximum penalty of life but the judge will likely consider several factors, including aggravating circumstances, the guilty plea and the timing when it came.
The case took a dramatic turn after an autopsy revealed she had been shot, prompting a murder investigation. He was arrested and charged with murder and a firearm offence in January 2024.
However, the public was stunned in February after he pleaded guilty to manslaughter as the trial was due to start, saying he was provoked into shooting the woman he wed in 2015.
He said they were arguing and Melissa made certain comments about his sister and mother.
The prosecution accepted the plea, saying it had no evidence to challenge the provocation defence. The decision has triggered a raging public debate over whether the murder case should have been put to the jury.
The matter is being heard in the Gun Court, whose law blocks public access to proceedings. However, Justice Sykes recently announced that with the other aspects over, the sentencing hearing would be open to the public.
Relatives and members of the public held a protest this week, demanding justice and a long prison term for the former lawmaker, who represented St Mary Western in the House of Representatives.
Silvera is represented by King's Counsel Peter Champagnie, who told The Gleaner after the manslaughter plea was accepted by the court that the public will get more information about the circumstances during the sentencing.
