Several persons have been left homeless after a fire destroyed two structures in a yard in a section of Spanish Town, St Catherine this afternoon.

The blaze occurred at the intersection of Nugent Street and Old Market Street.

“We came having received the call and set in motion our operation. The fire was brought under control. So far, there has been no loss of life, and we continue to monitor the situation,” Nigel Cox, Assistant Superintendent for the Jamaica Fire Brigade in St Catherine, told The Gleaner.

The Gleaner was informed that the fire has displaced around 15 persons.

Occupants told The Gleaner that they have suffered financial losses.

Reports are that about 1:00 p.m., an occupant observed smoke coming from old structures on the property, and a fire was later seen.

The fire quickly spread to other areas, and the buildings, which house a shop and dwellings, were gutted.

The cause of the blaze is being investigated.
