Grief-stricken relatives of 14-year-old Gabriella Wright are appealing for urgent public support to save her brother, who remains critically injured following a house fire in St John’s Garden, Spanish Town in St Catherine.

Their mother, Suzette Campbell, is pleading for assistance to secure overseas medical treatment for 25-year-old Coney Daley, who suffered burns to more than 80 per cent of his body while trying to rescue his sister.

“Mi a beg unu, please, help me… mi daughter die in the fire and mi son battering for life,” she said Friday, while expressing gratitude to staff at Spanish Town Hospital for their care.

Relatives say Daley’s injuries are too severe to be fully treated locally.

They have also appealed to Prime Minister Dr Andrew Holness and Member of Parliament Andrew Wheatley for assistance.

The family is now working with Crisis Support Charity and the Burn Foundation of Jamaica to raise US$60,000 (J$9.4 million) for an air ambulance transfer.

Representative of the Burn Foundation of Jamaica, Stephen Josephs, says a hospital in the United States has accepted Daley for treatment.

“If this gentleman goes overseas, he has the possibility of a fight. Because of the extent of burns, it’s difficult to manage on the island.”

Gabriella, a student of Jonathan Grant High School, died after becoming trapped in a rear bedroom with no escape as the fire engulfed the family’s five-bedroom home last Wednesday.

His brother got burned while trying to reach her.

The five-bedroom house was destroyed.

Fire officials say the cause of the blaze remains under investigation.
