Truck drivers travelling along the main thoroughfare in St.Thomas, particularly on the Morant Bay to Kingston route, are demonstrating improved compliance with proper load transport practices, thereby reducing risks to other road users.

This was disclosed by the newly appointed Commanding Officer for the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) St Thomas Division, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Rohan Ritchie.

He was speaking during the St Thomas Municipal Corporation’s monthly meeting on April 9.

DSP Ritchie explained that truckers had previously allowed aggregates to spill onto the roadway, obstructing traffic flow and reducing the manoeuverability of other motorists.

“We have now [stepped] up enforcement where that is concerned. We started by doing sensitisation with respect to the truckers, and we have now reached the stage where… prosecution [is being pursued]. [As a result], we are [seeing greater] compliance,” the senior officer stated.

He commended the National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA) for intensifying efforts to keep the roads clean, while pledging the full support of the police.

Meanwhile, the commanding officer noted that the police in the parish have devised a strategic plan to address the issue of motor-vehicle larceny.

Additionally, he reported the cooperation of stakeholders, including taxi operators, in maintaining order within the capital, Morant Bay.

DSP Ritchie, who recently convened a meeting with the operators, stated: “As a matter of fact, they are giving us very good support.

“It is still early days but with continuous coordination and partnership, compliance will follow,” he added.
