A woman who was employed as a supervisor at a business in Portmore, St Catherine, was freed of a charge of embezzlement on Friday after the Crown conceded it could not mount a successful prosecution.

When the matter was mentioned in the St Catherine Parish Court, the Clerk of Court outlined to the judge that a prima facie case could not be established against 28-year-old Zasha McLeod.

The court was told that no audit was done to substantiate the level of loss reported by the business she is accused of stealing from.

Presiding Judge Genetta Smikle then told the accused that she was free to go.

Her attorney, Danae Reid, said "I feel very good that justice has been served for my client and that she can now get on with her life in a productive way."

It was alleged that, between May 19 and June 11, 2025, McLeod failed to deposit payments for gas totalling more than $1.3 million.

When confronted, McLeod denied any involvement and subsequently tendered her resignation.

A report was made to the police and, following an investigation, McLeod was taken into custody on July 27 and later charged.
