Clarendon man charged with arson and burglary

A 56-year-old Clarendon man has been charged for allegedly breaking into a house and setting a fire.

Charged with arson and burglary is Conroy White, otherwise called ‘Sojie’ or ‘Morris’, a farmer of Bullock district.

A court date for him is being finalised.

The incident happened in his community on Sunday, August 2.

The police report that about 1:00 a.m., a man was asleep when he was awakened by noises coming from another section of the house.

On making checks, he observed smoke coming from a clothes basket, following which he saw White exiting the house through a window, according to the police.

The police say the fire began to spread, and a report was made to the police.

Assistance was sought from the fire department, which extinguished the blaze.

According to the police, assessments from the fire department revealed that the blaze caused an estimated $200,000 in damage.

The police say White later turned himself in, and he was arrested.

He was charged on Monday, August 3, following an interview.
