GG: No J’can should feel at the back of the line

Governor General Sir Patrick Allen has urged Jamaicans, particularly young people, to embrace education and strive for excellence, declaring that “no Jamaican should ever feel as though they are standing at the back of the line”.

His Independence Day message, delivered Thursday by Acting Custos of St Elizabeth Stevon Sheriffe during the parish’s Independence Day Flag Raising ceremony at the Black River High School, said Jamaica’s achievements on the global stage prove that its people can compete with the best anywhere in the world.

“The respect Jamaica enjoys across the globe reflects the pursuit of excellence. Our athletes inspire us with their achievements. Our scholars distinguish themselves in leading institutions, and Jamaicans continue to excel wherever they are called to serve,” the governor general said.

“Our accomplishments remind us that no Jamaican should ever feel as though they are standing at the back of the line,” Sir Patrick said.

Marking Jamaica’s 64th anniversary of Independence under the theme, ‘United in Celebrating Resilience’, Sir Patrick said the occasion was a reminder of the country’s determination to overcome challenges, pointing to the nation’s recovery from Hurricane Melissa as a recent example of resilience in action.

He praised the efforts of government, businesses, emergency responders, communities and international partners who joined forces to rebuild after the devastating storm.

“Such acts of kindness remind us that resilience grows stronger when compassion and unity walk hand in hand,” the message stated.

The governor general also challenged young Jamaicans to view education as the pathway to achieving their independence and securing brighter futures.

“Whether through academic studies, technical training, or skills development, every young Jamaican should seize the opportunities available to prepare for the future. Education equips our children to compete confidently, ensuring they are never left behind in an increasingly demanding world,” he said.

Calling on Jamaicans to remain grateful and united, Sir Patrick urged citizens to pursue excellence with humility while continuing to support one another.

“On this 64th anniversary of Independence, let us be bold in pursuing excellence, patient in overcoming adversity, proud of all that Jamaica has accomplished, and humble enough to recognise that our greatest achievements are made possible through God’s grace and our commitment to one another.”
