Three cops injured, man fatally shot in alleged confrontation in Mount Salem, St James

Two policemen and a policewoman were shot and injured, and a man was shot and killed during an alleged gunfight early this morning in Mount Salem, Montego Bay, St James.

The dead man has been identified as 29-year-old Romario ‘Jerry’ Brown, who the police say was wanted for murder and shootings.

A police report, which was seen by The Gleaner, indicated that about 3:18 a.m., a police team assigned to the Area One Area Fugitive Apprehension Team (AFAT) unit was on patrol along Crawford Street in the area when they came under heavy gunfire and took evasive action.

During the exchange, a man and three police personnel were injured.

One of the cops received gunshot wounds to his shoulders and both legs, another received a graze to his right side, and the policewoman was shot in the chest, with the bullet lodging in her cellphone in her police vest.

The police say an illegal firearm was seized at the scene.

The injured persons were transported to Cornwall Regional Hospital, where the man was pronounced dead.

It is reported that one of the cops has been admitted to hospital, while his two colleagues were treated and released.

Mount Salem has been under a zone of special operations (ZOSO) since September 1, 2017 — the first of several initiatives to blunt rampant criminality.
