The Jamaica Red Cross (JRC) has donated $192 million in a symbolic gesture to support the local agriculture sector as the region gears up for the 20th Caribbean Week of Agriculture (CWA), which will be hosted in Jamaica from September 27 to October 2.
The sums are to given to farmers, fishers and small business operators as direct cash donations.
JRC Director General Yvonne Clarke presented the cheque to Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Mining Floyd Green during a press briefing at the ministry’s St Andrew offices on Tuesday.
The donation comes ahead of the milestone staging of the regional event, which will bring together Caribbean countries and international partners to discuss the future of food systems, agriculture, fisheries and rural communities.
Green has stated that Jamaica is honoured to host the event, which he described as having evolved into more than a conference, providing a forum for the region to address issues affecting food security and agricultural development.
This year’s CWA, to be held in Trelawny, is being staged under the theme, 'The New F.A.C.E. of Caribbean Food Systems – Transformation and Resilience'.
Green has indicated that the theme was particularly relevant as the region continues to grapple with climate change, rising food costs, global uncertainty and supply-chain disruptions.
He said the event would provide opportunities for discussions, partnerships and ideas aimed at advancing regional food security while creating new opportunities for growth and investment in agriculture.
The minister has also stated that Jamaica was looking forward to welcoming its “Caribbean brothers and sisters”, along with regional and international partners, while showcasing the country’s culture and hospitality.
