Holness, Golding hail Lieutenant Stitchie's contribution to Jamaican music

Prime Minister Dr Andrew Holness and Leader of the Opposition Mark Golding have expressed sadness at the passing of veteran entertainer Lieutenant Stitchie, saying his music will continue to serve as an inspiration.

Stitchie, whose real name is Cleveland Laing, passed away today after ailing for some time.

In his tribute, Holness reflected on Stitchie's contribution to music.

“Stitchie was one of Jamaica's greatest DJs of the dancehall genre. However, he could very well have been described as one of Jamaica's best storytellers and humourists. His discography forms part of the soundtrack of the 1980s and 1990s,” he said in a post on social media.

“I recall fondly attending a concert at my high school at which he performed. In the latter part of his career, he would also make his mark in gospel music. My sincere condolences to his family and loved ones. May his soul rest in peace,” he added.

For his part, Golding called Stitchie a beloved son of Jamaica whose talent and music touched lives at home and across the world.

“His contribution to Jamaican music and culture will forever be remembered,” he said.

“His legacy will continue to inspire generations,” Golding added.
