Cavalier ended their four-game losing streak in the Jamaica Premier League, with a dominant second-half display, beating Spanish Town Police 4-0 at Stadium East in the lone Monday game.
Cavalier got all four goals in the second half through Jerome McCleary (5nd), Jeovanni Laing (56th), Christopher Ainsworth (63rd), Chad James (68th), and Damarley Williams (89th).
Cavalier assistant coach Colin Wilson said they were eager to end the slump and he was happy it came by way of an efficient performance.
“We did a lot of training in scoring goals because that has been the problem we’ve had. So coming into this game, we wanted three points and a lot of goals.
The win lifted Cavalier (29 points) back into the top six (6th place) and pushed Arnett Gardens, who are also on 29 points, down to seventh.
“We told the guys we have to be in the top six, and we came here with that aim to get back in the top six,” Wilson added.
Cavalier should have taken the lead after just two minutes, but Kimarley Scott kicked straight to goalkeeper Glenroy Samuels from seven yards, and with Dwayne Allen wide open at the far post.
The two teams slugged it out after that, with Cavalier having the better looks at goal, although Sean Cato put a chance just wide for Spanish Town Police in the 18th minute.
Moments later, Scott headed over from a free kick as Cavalier continued to create openings, and around the half-hour mark they had a long spell of possession which culminated with Adrian Reid forcing a diving save from Samuels from the top of the box.
Three minutes into the second half, Police thought they had the opening goal, but Andre Clennon was ajudged to have handled Chevon Walters’ header.
However, there were no such troubles in the 52nd minute, when Allen found McCleary inside the box and he calmly slotted past Samuels.
Captain Laing would add a second four minutes later, after a bit of skill and a striker’s finish to complement.
Ainsworth made it 3-0 after he found enormous time and space in the area, before hammering a shot past Samuels.
Cavalier continued to ride their momentum and Chad James turned home Allen’s misplaced shot from six yards to make it 4-0.
Williams then rounded off the performance with a powerful strike past Samuels in the 89th minute.
Spanish Town Police coach Oneil Thompson said they had a meltdown in the second half.
“It’s a game of 90 minutes plus. We had a good first half and we had some breakdowns in the second phase. We had some turnovers that led to some goals. We have to go back to the drawing board and work on the areas we think we had a breakdown,” he said.
