FANS inside the National Stadium at the Gibson McCook Relays tomorrow can expect a grand finale when the Championship High School Boys’ 4x400 metres closes the meet at 8:45 p.m.
A titanic battle is expected, as defending champions Kingston College, Jamaica College, Excelsior High and Calabar High will be in a dogfight as teams seek psychological advantage ahead of next month’s ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys’ and Girls’ Athletics Championships in an event which could help decide the overall champions of the meet.
Kingston College have ruled supreme for the past three years in the event among local schoolboys and will be hoping to continue that dominance with a win tomorrow. Fans got a preview of what is to come at the recent Camperdown Classics where Jamaica College held on for dear life from a strong-finishing Kingston College, winning in 3:10.50. Kingston College were second in 3:10.70, with Excelsior third in 3:11.12.
With the form of the teams coming into the event, a sub-3:10 is in the making and definitely the winning time of 3:10.26 registered by Kingston College last year will be threatened.
After their epic contest at Camperdown Classics, all indications are pointing to another close encounter between the two ‘colleges’. But Calabar, who led for most of the way at the Corporate Area Championships before their anchor leg runner was caught very late by Kingston College, along with Excelsior, are in with great chances to pull off the win.
Excelsior have the firepower to pull off a win, as the David Riley-coached team is yet to run at full strength. With their strong core of 400m hurdlers set to make an impact on the team, they could be the ones to beat and they are my favourites to pull off the win.
TOP THREE
1. Excelsior High
2. Kingston College
3. Jamaica College
