Supernatural Power romps to Vet Day Trophy

United States-bred SUPERNATURAL POWER won yesterday’s World Vet Day Trophy as she should, a horse who shouldn’t have been in the race, coasting in a baker’s dozen clear of IS THAT A FACT, another out-of-class American, who had four lengths to spare on the closest local-bred, six-year-old COOKIE DAY N NIGHT.
Confirmed as the fourth-best horse in the country a week shy of five months ago, narrowly losing third to FUNCAANDUN in December’s US$300,000 Mouttet Mile behind RIDEALLDAY and LEGACY ISLE, SUPERNATURAL POWER hardly broke a sweat two classes lower, clocking 1:35.3 at a mile, getting within a second of Wantin An Havin’s track record set in 1997.
Having finished behind only Mouttet Mile winners, or runners-up, in her last three races, four-year-old SUPERNATURAL POWER made a mockery of a conditions bye, a fallacy which allows superior runners, especially foreigners, to ride the conditions’ turnstile like bulls in a china shop.
Before finishing fourth in December’s Mouttet Mile behind stablemate RIDEALLDAY, LEGACY ISLE and FUNCAANDUN, SUPERNATURAL POWER had actually clocked the fastest time at a mile for 2026, a zippy 1:36.2, carrying 119lb in an October open allowance, repeating against TIZ TOK, who she had beaten at the same level, clocking 1:25.0 for seven furlongs in September.
SUPERNATURAL POWER’s last run was second behind RIDEALLDAY track record 1:41.4 in Easter Monday’s Ian Levy Cup. The Mouttet Mile winner obliterated fellow importee Smile ‘N’ Leave’s eight-and-a-half-furlong mark.
RIDEALLDAY posted 1:41.4 with 126lb, two-fifths of a second faster than Smile ‘N’ Leave’s 1:42.1, carrying 96lb in 1997.
SUPERNATURAL POWER, who finished two and a half lengths behind RIDEALLDAY, had clocked 1:42.2, a fifth of a second off Smile ‘N’ Leave’s 19-year-old track record.
As ridiculous as it might sound, SUPERNATURAL POWER, a proven grade-one runner, who twice beat open allowance in the last seven months, will next race at that level for another run around the conditions’ mulberry bush, instead of being a fixture, as she should be, among the best horses in the country.
SUPERNATURAL POWER closed the 10-race card as a 1-5 winner for two-time defending champion and leading rider Raddesh Roman and Philip Feanny.
Tevin Foster and in-form Richie Shakes, who rode four winners last Sunday, bagged two winners apiece. Foster rode back-to-back winners, 4-5 favourite HONOUR PRINCE and 6-5 fancy, ANY MEANS, in the third and fourth events, respectively.
Shakes notched this sixth winner in two meets, PRINCE MARSHALL and NEWLAND LINKS in the third and sixth, respectively.
Patrick Lynch saddled back-to-back winners, PRINCESS CATALEYA and LAUREN’S SECRET with Tajay Suckoo and Nicardo Carr, in the seventh and eighth races, respectively.
Racing continues with another 10-race card this afternoon.
