Burrowes qualifies for Texas State Open

Justin Burrowes qualified for the 56th M&P Group Texas State Open golf championship to be held from Tuesday to Friday at the Cascades Country Club in Tyler, Texas.

He will tee off on Tuesday along with a big field of 155 other golfers who are vying for a projected purse of US$200,000.

Burrowes qualified for the prestigious and sought-after event on his third attempt. He expects that the competition will be stiff but is looking forward to giving it his best shot. The Texas State Open attracts PGA (Professional Golf Association) level golfers, some with many years of experience at high-level golf.

“I feel super excited. I’m super happy that I’ve qualified. I think this is my third year trying to qualify. First time getting through the qualifier, which I’m obviously really happy about. I played well in my qualifying round. I feel like my game is in a good place. Each day at a time, I feel like I’m proving to myself more and more that my game is good enough to compete. Obviously, the tournament is going to be four days. It’s the middle of summer. It’s going to be hot. I’m sure it’s going to come with challenges. I don’t think it’s going to be necessarily easy by any means, but I feel like if I go out there and execute and play my game, that I’ll be able to manage myself and give myself a good chance. I feel overall just very happy and excited for the event,” said Burrowes.

Burrowes turned professional in 2023 at the 56th Jamaica Open Golf Championship at the Tryall Golf Club in Hanover. He is one of Jamaica’s most successful amateur golfers, representing the island at numerous events such as the Caribbean Amateur Junior Golf Championship (CAJGC), the Caribbean Amateur Golf Championship, and the Latin American Amateur Golf Championship as well as other events. He is the only Jamaican golfer to win the Boys Under-18 category of the CAJGC and has always contributed valuable points to the team score whenever he is selected to represent the country. He also served as team captain on multiple occasions.

Jodi Munn-Barrow, president of the Jamaica Golf Association, congratulated Burrowes for qualifying for the Texas Open, saying that she expects him to give a good performance.
