Track and field competition at the Commonwealth Games gets under way today at the Scotstoun Stadium in Glasgow, with 10 Jamaicans in action as the country’s athletes begin their quest for podium finishes.

Jamaica will be hoping to better the performance from the last Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, where they finished with 15 medals, including six gold, seven silver, and two bronze.

Sprinter Rohan Watson will be the first Jamaican in action today as he competes in the preliminary round of the men’s 100 metres at 4:10 a.m., Jamaica time. Watson will run out of lane six in heat five.

Twenty minutes later, Jordan Turner, one of two Jamaicans in the men’s long jump, will contest Group A of the qualifying round. The other Jamaican, Tajay Gayle, will compete in Group B at 5:50 a.m. Jamaica time.

National champion Demario Prince and Jerome Campbell will be hoping to advance to the final of the men’s 110m hurdles later in the day when they contest the preliminary round of the event. Campbell will run out of lane five in heat one, while Prince will compete from lane seven in heat two.

National champion Nyoka Clunis will compete in the qualifying round of the women’s hammer throw at 5:40 a.m., bringing Jamaica’s first session to a close.

High jumpers Raymond Richards and Romaine Beckford, who have both cleared 2.30 metres this season, will be hoping to give Jamaica its first set of medals at the championships when they contest the men’s high jump final during the second session at 1:10 p.m.

National champion KellyAnn Beckford and Adelle Tracey will close out Jamaica’s preliminary round action for the day when they compete in the women’s 800 metres, scheduled to begin at 1:15 p.m. Tracey will compete in heat one, while Beckford will line up in heat two.
