Mauricio Pochettino believes Chelsea should be stripped of the 2016-17 Premier League title because of financial breaches and that the Tottenham team he managed that season should be awarded the honour retrospectively.
In July, Chelsea were fined £10 million (US$13.4 million) and handed a suspended two-window transfer ban after appealing penalties for breaching English Football Association agent regulations.
“We should have been awarded it,” Pochettino said in published interviews yesterday.
“If that was true, then we deserve to be champions that year, for sure. They were punished, they admitted it? So that’s it. The title should be for the team that was second.”
Chelsea won the Premier League by seven points ahead of Tottenham in 2017.
The London club was initially given a suspended six-point deduction in addition to the fine, but the points penalty was later replaced by the suspended transfer ban.
Chelsea admitted to 74 breaches of FA regulations covering agents, dealings with intermediaries, and third-party investment in players.
Pochettino left Tottenham in 2019 and later took charge of Chelsea for the 2023-24 season. His tenure ended by mutual consent after a difficult campaign in which the club failed to qualify for the Champions League.
He is now coach of the United States national team.
