Bembridge treble sinks BB Coke

A hat-trick from Tyraun Bembridge powered Lacovia High to a convincing 3-0 victory over B.B. Coke in their ISSA daCosta Cup preliminary-round contest at the B.B. Coke playfield yesterday.

Bembridge opened the scoring in the 20th minute before doubling Lacovia’s advantage in the 35th. He completed his hat-trick five minutes later.

The victory keeps Lacovia second in the standings on 12 points, while B.B. Coke remain fourth on nine.

Lacovia assistant coach Willard Douglas said his team did well to protect its lead and secure the important victory.

“In the first half, we kept the pressure up and were in the ascendancy for most of the game. In the second half, having gone up by those three goals, we were kind of laid-back, so B.B. Coke kind of got back into the game. However, we really stood firm and tall and ensured that we were victorious in the end,” said Douglas.

Douglas said the team has also been working to improve its discipline since the preseason.

“From preseason, we have been trying to overcome the level of indiscipline. So we are improving in that department. We need to become more disciplined in terms of how we attack and how we defend,” he added.

Meanwhile, in St James, 14-year-old Jhemar Roswell and Cavon Morris helped Irwin High maintain their perfect record with a 2-0 victory over former champions Herbert Morrison Technical High at Irwin.

Roswell, an Under-14 national representative, scored his first goal of the competition, while Morris added the other as Irwin stayed atop the standings with 12 points.

Irwin assistant coach Sanjay Sterling said the performance highlighted the team’s defensive solidity while showing its attacking versatility.

“We knew it was going to be a very difficult game, so we had to come out and get the boys ready. We wanted them to remain sharp, remain humble, and keep focused as we came into this game,” said Sterling.

“Roswell debuted well, scoring his first goal in the competition. The team’s performance overall was good and we got another clean sheet,” he added.
