After more than a decade of knowing each other, Sedia Betty and Daniel Dinnyes’ destination wedding in Jamaica was never going to be a single-day affair.

Their love story began on December 29, 2012, at Harrods Food Hall in London. Coincidentally, it was the first visit for both. At the time, Sedia had moved to the United Kingdom to pursue her studies and career, while Daniel had relocated for work.

Hours disappeared as they spoke about travel, life, and the futures they imagined for themselves. Looking back, Sedia remembers immediately noticing something different about Daniel. She told Island Wedding: “I was immediately drawn to Daniel's intelligence and the way he carried himself. Our conversations flowed effortlessly, and I remember being intrigued by how knowledgeable he was, while still remaining humble and genuinely interested in other people.”

As their friendship deepened, his admiration for Sedia grew into something far more meaningful. “The more time I spent with Sedia, the more I admired her intelligence, determination, kindness, and strength of character. I realised I was falling in love when I found that she was the first person I wanted to share every success, challenge, and adventure with. I would call her every day and keep her on the phone for ages,” said Daniel.

As the years passed and their relationship deepened, Daniel says the decision to marry her eventually felt obvious. “When I met Sedia, I felt like I had won the prize. I was drawn to her from the very beginning, and very early on, I knew she was someone very special. I could not imagine building a future without her, and I knew she was the person I wanted beside me for every chapter ahead. By the time I proposed, the decision felt completely effortless.”

THE PROPOSAL

The proposal happened in London on Sedia’s birthday during what she believed was simply another beautiful evening together. Daniel had planned dinner at Bacchanalia, one of her favourite restaurants, before Sedia suggested continuing the celebration at The Library Bar at The Lanesborough. While at the bar, Daniel handed Sedia his phone and asked her to read a note. As she focused on reading the message and the waiter poured their champagne, Daniel slipped the ring onto Sedia’s finger.

In an unexpected twist, Sedia had unknowingly captured the proposal itself while recording moments from the evening, creating an extra keepsake from the night she said yes.

She recalls being caught completely off guard. “Even though we had spoken about taking the next steps in our lives, I did not expect it to happen when it did. I was overwhelmed with emotion and felt an incredible sense of joy and excitement. At that moment, everything stood still. It just felt right. It was one of the happiest and most memorable moments of my life.”

The couple’s festivities began in Kingston during Carnival Week, before moving across the island through rafting experiences, intimate dinners, and celebrations shared with friends and family.

THE CEREMONY

The official wedding weekend opened with a private sunset catamaran cruise in Montego Bay before the celebration was hosted at the Half Moon luxury resort with an elegant black-tie wedding on Sunday, April 19.

For Sedia, one of the most emotional moments was walking down the aisle. “My father had passed away, so I asked my three brothers to walk me to Daniel. Having them by my side at that moment was incredibly moving and felt like a beautiful tribute to my father, who would have been so proud to be there with us.”

Guests from Japan, Singapore, the Netherlands, Los Angeles, California, and beyond filled the dance floor in what became one of Sedia’s favourite memories of the night. “We kept the vibe very Jamaican because I wanted to share my rich heritage and culture with our friends, so all they heard was dancehall and soca. Looking around and seeing family and friends from different countries, cultures and backgrounds united in pure joy is a moment I will never forget.”

Reflecting on her husband, Sedia says what she values most is not grand gestures but the way he makes space for her to simply be herself. “[It’s his] quiet confidence and his curiosity about the world. He is thoughtful in everything he does and incredibly dependable… With Daniel, I can be my authentic self. I never feel like I have to trade a flaw for favour or pretend to be someone I am not. I know I am loved exactly as I am.”

Daniel’s answer was equally certain. “Sedia is incredibly wise, driven, and ambitious, yet she has a generosity and warmth that touches everyone around her … She is loyalty, she is strength, and she is my ride or die, literally,” he said.

As a nod to their destination wedding celebrations, the couple asked guests to share gifts in the form of supporting charities that would benefit the island, including Food For The Poor Jamaica and Jamaica Basic Schools Foundation UK.
