THE EDITOR, Madam: Marcel Bent’s letter raises a valuable question about how Jamaicans remember Emancipation and Independence. He is right that names carry historical and political meaning, and our commemorations should never suggest freedom was a gift from enslavers or sovereignty was simply bestowed by colonial rulers. Yet, the deeper problem may not be the names themselves, but the story we attach to them and how we understand the Jamaican people.
