A taxi operator and a mason were allegedly held with a handgun and ammunition during a police operation on Sunday in Port Maria, St Mary.

Commanding officer for the St Mary Police Division, Superintendent Anthony Wallace, says the seizure was made about 10:20 p.m. while members of the division were conducting a National Coordinated Roadblock operation along Hudson Street in Port Maria.

“During the operation, a grey Toyota Fielder with two occupants was stopped and searched," explained Wallace.

“Upon inspection of a brown bag in possession of one of the passengers, officers discovered a Ruger nine millimetre pistol, loaded with a magazine containing 12 nine millimetre cartridges. Both suspects were subsequently arrested and taken into police custody," he added.

He said investigations into the matter are ongoing and the identities of both men are being withheld pending charges.

“This incident underscores the vigilance and proactive measures of the JCF (Jamaica Constabulary Force) to intercept illegal arms and prevent potential threats to public safety. Members of the public are encouraged to continue partnering with the police by providing information that can assist in crime-fighting efforts," Wallace further said.
