Apprentice jockey charged in armed robbery of Portmore business

The police have have charged a 21-year-old apprentice jockey in connection with the armed robbery of a business establishment in Newlands, Portmore, last month.

He is Delroy Eric Walker, a construction worker and apprentice jockey of Carol Crescent, Newlands in St Catherine.

Detectives assigned to the St Catherine South police division charged Walker on Friday, with using a prohibited weapon to commit a scheduled offence, conspiracy, robbery with aggravation, and possession of a prohibited weapon.

Reports from police are that about 8:40 p.m. on October 25, Walker and another man allegedly posed as customers and entered the business place.

Walker allegedly brandished a firearm and held the owner at gunpoint, while his accomplice robbed the complainant of $20,000 in cash, one quart of white rum valued at $3,300, one quart of Appleton VX rum valued at $17,000, several packs of cigarettes, and a case pan from a roulette cash machine.

The men reportedly escaped in a station wagon motor car. A report was made to the Portmore police, who launched an investigation that led to Walker’s arrest.

He was positively identified during the probe and was subsequently charged following a question-and-answer session in the presence of his attorney.

His accomplice remains at large and is being sought by investigators.
