Jamaican students shine as Campion College's Mijaun Talbot tops Caribbean in CSEC maths

Jamaican students have recorded strong performances in the 2025 Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) examinations, securing first place in 13 subjects, including Mathematics.

That's according to the Caribbean Examinations Council’s (CXC) Regional Merit List, which ranks the top ten candidates in the Caribbean in each subject.

CSEC exams, taken by Grade 11 students, mark the region’s benchmark for academic achievement at the seconday school level.

Among the standout results, Campion College’s Mijaun Talbot tied with Alexia Marine Pouthier of St Joseph’s Convent, Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago, for first place in Mathematics (General) - a core subject.

Three other Campion students finished in the top 10 - Stephen Wong (3rd, tie) and Matthew Wright and Chelsea Marriott tied with three other students from Trinidad and Tobago for 10th.

Marriott also placed 2nd in Principles of Accounts, 5th in Economics, and 10th in Additional Mathematics.

Jamaica had two students among the top 10 regional performers in the other key subject, English A -Davia Tappin (6th - tie) and Aliana Walters (10th -tie), both from Immaculate Conception High School in St Andrew.

Students from Trinidad and Tobago took all the top rankings in key science subjects of physics and chemistry.

2. Maleka Francis of York Castle High – first (tie) in Biology (General)

3. Peter-John Wright of Campion College – first in Additional Mathematics (General)

4. Sa-eel Antoine Harris of Campion College – first in Principles of Accounts (General)

5. Savindi Amarakoon of Campion College – first in Caribbean History (General)

6. Javille Brown of Campion College – first in Industrial Technology (Electrical)

7. Kayla Serena Hewan of Herbert Morrison Technical High – first in Industrial Technology (Mechanical)

8. Antonio Mario-Edward Burrell of Knox College – first in Industrial Technology (Building)

9. Sai Pydipalli of Petersfield High Evening Institute – first (tie) in Human and Social Biology (General)

10. Kamarsha Kamala Grant of York Castle High – first in Family and Resource Management (Technical)

11. Rachel Naomi Hazle of Mount Alvernia High – first (tie) in Food, Nutrition and Health (Technical)

12. Alliana Freeman of Campion College - first in French (General)

13. Caira Cox of Campion College - first in Economics (General)

Jamaica also featured prominently in Agricultural Science, Economics, Social Studies, French, and Visual Arts, with more than 60 students earning top ten placements in over 35 subjects.

Some 31 Jamaican schools have students on the merit list. They include Greater Portmore High, Old Harbour High, Munro College, St Andrew Technical High, Manning's School, Immaculate Conception High School, York Castle High School, Campion College, Glenmuir High School, Wolmer's Boys' School, Mount Alvernia High School, Kingston College, Holy Childhood High School, Hampton School, St Andrew High School for Girls, Ardenne High School, Gaynstead High School, Westwood High School, St Hilda’s High School, Mount Saint Joseph Catholic High School, Distinction College, St Hilda’s High School, Knox College, Herbert Morrison Technical High, Petersfield High Evening Institute, Dinthill Technical High, St George's College, Bishop Gibson High, Morant Bay High, Wolmer's High School for Girls, Montego Bay High.

Campion College was the Jamaican school with the most appearances on the merit list, with 35 mentions across multiple subjects.

Over than 100,000 candidates across the region sat CSEC exams, which spanned more than 35 subjects.
