A judge in the Kingston and St Andrew Parish Court today granted a remand application by the police to keep popular content creator Jaii Frais, whose given name is Jhaedee Richards, in custody as they continue to probe Sunday’s shooting incident at Big Wall.
Richards, who is being represented by attorney-at-law Isat Buchanan, is to undergo further questioning by investigators today.
Under the law, the police have 48 hours to keep someone in custody without charge. The police can also go to court to seek an order from a judge to extend the detention.
Additionally, a person in custody, through their lawyer, can apply to the court for an order to compel the police to either charge them or release them.
No charge has been laid against Richards, as the police say their investigation into the shooting is ongoing.
The incident occurred on Sunday at the Ranny Williams Entertainment Centre in St Andrew during the Big Wall party, where three people were shot.
According to the police, about 9:30 p.m., a physical altercation developed between patrons at the event. The dispute reportedly escalated, leading to an exchange of gunfire between two individuals.
The Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) said that when the shooting subsided, three persons, two of whom were involved in the altercation, were found suffering from gunshot wounds.
They were transported to hospital for treatment. Police said one of the injured was later treated and released into custody, while two others remain hospitalised.
Further, the police reported that two firearms were seized in connection with the incident.
Another man has since been taken into custody, but his identity is being withheld pending further investigations.
The probe is being led by the Half-Way Tree Criminal Investigation Branch.
