The St Andrew North police are searching for a man who fled from officers and left behind a bag containing a gun and police gear in the Cornfield district of Gordon Town.

The police report that on Tuesday afternoon, a team was on patrol when they spotted a man walking along a roadway carrying a bag.

On seeing the police, the man reportedly dropped the bag and ran into a nearby gully, escaping the area.

The police say the bag was retrieved and searched, leading to the discovery of a .38 revolver with its serial number erased, a police denim uniform shirt, and a ballistic vest.

A welding rod was also found inside the bag, the police said.

Investigators say the recovery of official police items is of concern, as it raises the possibility of impersonation or other criminal activity.

The St Andrew North Criminal Investigation Branch (CIB) has since launched a probe into the incident as efforts continue to identify and locate the man.

The seizure brings to eight the number of illegal firearms seized in the division since the start of the year.

Anyone with information that can assist the police is urged to contact the Constant Spring Police Station or dial 119.

Meanwhile, detectives assigned to the Constant Spring CIB are still searching for a man who fled from his premises, where an illegal firearm was found.

Being sought is 48-year-old Oniel Reid, who is of a Pleasant Valley, Red Hills address.
