A St Catherine man was fatally shot after he allegedly engaged police in a shootout in Spanish Town, St Catherine, yesterday.

The police have identified the deceased as Roshaine Smith, a 33-year-old barber of Tryall Heights in Spanish Town.

Reports are that about 5:30 p.m., the police were on patrol along Rosemary Lane in his community when he was spotted acting in a suspicious manner.

The police reportedly called out to him and he pulled a handgun from a bag over his shoulder and fired at the team.

The police say they took defensive action and returned the fire.

When the shooting subsided Smith was found suffering from gunshot wounds with a firearm reportedly beside him.

He was taken to the Spanish Town Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The Independent Commission of Investigations has launched a probe into the matter.
