Hurricane Melissa contributes to Trelawny property tax collection shortfall

The Trelawny Municipal Corporation says it collected $342 million in property taxes for the fiscal year 2025/2026.
This information was revealed to The Gleaner by Chief Executive Officer Andrew Harrison, who acknowledged that the Corporation missed its target.
"The amount collected represents 91 per cent of our target of $378 million. A number of factors contributed to us falling short of our target. For example, the closure of the Jackson Town Tax office which was destroyed during the passage of Hurricane Melissa."
Harrison also revealed that $12 million was collected from trade licences.
Mayor Collen Gager told The Gleaner "we will be paying closer attention to the payment of trade licence fees as well as [fees for] billboards and signs."
The target for 2026/2027 was not provided.
