Detectives assigned to the St Catherine South Police Division have launched an investigation into a breaking and robbery of automated teller machines (ATMs) at the Scotiabank in Portmore.
Although the exact amount of cash stolen is undetermined, it is believed to be substantial.
According to the police, between 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 27 and 8:43 a.m. on Sunday, June 28, culprits gained access to the ATMs, stole the cash, and escaped.
The theft was discovered during routine checks by security personnel, who observed that the door to the facility was partially open, the police reported.
An initial report was made to the bank’s management and the police.
The police say investigators reviewed surveillance footage, which reportedly showed several individuals dressed in black arriving in a Nissan Latio sedan and entering the area used by security personnel to access the ATMs.
The group is alleged to have used access codes to open four ATM safes before removing a large sum of cash and fleeing the scene.
According to the police, while investigators have not confirmed the circumstances surrounding the breach, it is understood that there were no signs of forced entry and that only authorised security personnel have access to the area where the theft occurred.
Each ATM is reportedly capable of holding up to $20 million.
The Portmore Criminal Investigation Branch is conducting an intensive investigation into the matter.
