Man accused of killing Portmore taxi operator was on bail for another case, court told

The man accused of gunning down a taxi operator in Portmore, St Catherine, was remanded when the matter came before the St Catherine Parish Court on Friday.

The accused, Tywayne Hinds, otherwise known as ‘Lasco’, is charged with murder, conspiracy to commit murder, possession of a prohibited weapon, unauthorised possession of ammunition and using a weapon to commit a felony.

When the matter came before Senior Parish Court Judge Desiree Alleyne, it was revealed that Hinds was on bail for another offence at the time of the alleged incident.

Alleyne subsequently ordered that Hinds be remanded.

The case was transferred to the Circuit Court, where it is to be mentioned on September 15.

Killed in the July 21 shooting was Andre Thomas of Portmore, St Catherine.

Allegations are that about 9:30 p.m. Thomas was along Dawkins Drive in the vicinity of Portmore Mall when he was approached by a man who brandished a firearm and shot him in the head.

The man then reportedly escaped from the area.

Thomas was assisted to Spanish Town Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Following an investigation, Hinds was arrested and subsequently charged.
