Island Traffic Authority warns against fake Road Code tests, learner’s permits

The Island Traffic Authority is warning the public about reports of individuals allegedly administering unauthorised Road Code tests and issuing learner’s permits.

According to the authority, the reports indicate that persons are being charged between $18,000 and $25,000 for what they are led to believe are official Road Code tests and legitimate learner’s permits.

It said the police have been contacted regarding the reports.

“The ITA wishes to make clear that these activities are not authorised by the authority. The official Road Code examination is administered by the ITA free of cost,” the agency said in a statement on Friday.

The authority explained that applicants who successfully complete the required examination process and are eligible for a learner’s permit must pay the prescribed $1,800 fee at Tax Administration Jamaica (TAJ), after which the learner’s permit is issued through the authorised process.

“The ITA does not authorise private individuals to administer its Road Code examination, issue learner’s permits, or arrange appointments on behalf of the authority.”

Members of the public are therefore urged not to accept learner’s permits or other licensing documents issued outside the authorised process and to report suspected fraudulent activity to the police and the ITA.
