Red Hills Road residents claim man killed in police shooting was gravely ill

Residents of Red Hills Road in St Andrew have claimed that the man who was fatally shot by the police in the area this morning was sick and under medical care.

This was shared by the Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM), which is probing the incident that triggered a fiery protest by residents.

“The residents have been vociferous in their protests, indicating that the deceased, Mr Castleton, is gravely ill and of feeble movements,” said INDECOM Commissioner Hugh Faulkner in an update.

The man shot and killed has been identified as 35-year-old Shane Castleton.

The shooting occurred along Karl Samuda Avenue and involved members of the Fugitive Apprehension Team of the Jamaica Constabulary Force.

“The investigation is in its preliminary stage; however, all officers have been interviewed and their accounts received. All relevant documentary material must be provided to the commission. Certain steps are being taken with regard to the law enforcement personnel firearms and the reportedly recovered firearm. These have to be submitted to the forensic lab,” said Faulkner.

He said an INDECOM team and investigators are engaged in a thorough and detailed examination of the circumstances leading to the incident.
