The police have charged a 16-year-old boy for allegedly setting a man on fire in Denham Town, Kingston, because he refused to join a protest over a fatal police shooting.

The teen was charged on Tuesday with causing grievous bodily harm with intent.

The police are alleging that the teen set the man, a resident of the area, on fire because he refused to participate in a protest over the fatal police shooting of alleged gang leader Armani Malcolm, otherwise known as ‘Bling Dawg’.

The police have said that Malcolm was the leader of the ‘One Away’ gang.

The shooting occurred in the community on Friday, September 18, and the protest by residents was held the following day.

The police say the teen and a man allegedly set the victim on fire.

The man, identified as Omarley Dennie, a resident of Denham Town, was arrested and charged on Wednesday, September 23, with causing grievous bodily harm with intent in connection with the incident.

The 16-year-old, who was listed as wanted, was apprehended by the police on Tuesday, September 29, and taken to the Denham Town Criminal Investigations Branch.

He was subsequently charged following a question-and-answer session and the recording of a caution statement.

His court date is being finalised.
