Jamaica Women’s U19s crushed in opener

ST JOHN’S, Antigua (CMC):

Trinidad and Tobago Women and Leeward Islands Women began their campaigns in the Rising Stars Under-19 Women’s Championship on a winning note when the competition got under way yesterday.

T&T made light work of Jamaica Women, thumping them by eight wickets, while Leeward Islands Women edged Windward Islands Women by one run under the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern method.

At Bethesda Sports Ground, Trinidad and Tobago Women cruised to an emphatic eight-wicket victory over Jamaica Women on the back of an impressive bowling performance.

Spinners Samara Ramnath and Brianna Harricharan shared seven wickets between them as T&T routed Jamaica for a paltry 39 in 11.5 overs.

Ramnath took 4-8, while Harricharan claimed three wickets in five balls without conceding a run.

Opener Teandra Morgan, who scored 14, was the only Jamaican batter to reach double figures as Ramnath ripped through the top order.

Jamaica lost Sashane Ricketts for a duck with two runs on the board but appeared to be recovering as Morgan and Shamara Hall carried the score to 24-1.

However, it all went downhill for Jamaica after Hall was stumped off Ramnath’s bowling, with the team losing six wickets for 13 runs to slump to 37-7.

Harricharan then removed Brianna Plummer and Neveah Webley in consecutive deliveries in her first over and, three balls later, also accounted for Davehjah Brown to wrap up the innings.

T&T then romped to victory, reaching 42-2 in 7.2 overs, with Harricharan leading the way with an unbeaten 14.

Slim margin

At Liberta Sports Club, Leeward Islands Women scraped home by the slimmest of margins after rain interrupted their clash with Windward Islands Women.

When the showers eventually brought the contest to an end, the Leeward Islands were declared winners by one run under the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern method.

Zara Skerritt top-scored with 36 at the top of the order and Aaliyah Weekes contributed 14 as the Leewards reached 118-8 from their 20 overs.

The Windwards did themselves no favours, conceding 41 extras, including 22 wides and 15 no-balls, in a shoddy bowling display.

Jaeda Tyrell was the pick of the bowlers with 3-21.

The Windward Islands were then comfortably placed at 50-2 after nine overs before the heavens opened, bringing play to a premature end.

Tyrell, unbeaten on 31 off 39 balls, almost led her side to victory, but captain Kaela George was run out off the last ball, swinging the equation in the Leeward Islands’ favour.
